"Stitches" is the second track and third single from Shawn Mendes's debut studio album, Handwritten. It was initially released to iTunes via Island Records on March 16, 2015, as the first pre-order exclusive track and was subsequently serviced to radio via Republic Records on May 5, 2015.[2] "Stitches" is the first song by Mendes to appear on a Billboard airplay chart, debuting at number 36 on the Mainstream Top 40 chart in June 2015, and eventually reaching number one. It became his first top 10 single on the Billboard Hot 100, charting at number four.[3] "Stitches" also reached the top 10 on the Canadian Hot 100, peaking at number 10. It also topped the Slovenian SloTop50 Chart, Scottish Official Charts Company, and UK Singles Chart and reached the top 5 in Germany, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.

It was nominated for Choice Music Single: Male Artist at the 2015 Teen Choice Awards.[4]

Background

"Stitches" is the first major single recorded by Shawn Mendes after being signed to Island Records. The song was composed in B♭ minor with a tempo of 150 beats per minute and a time signature of 4.[5] Mendes's vocals span one and a half octave, from Dflat3 to an Aflat4 belt after the bridge which continues into the chorus. It was written and produced by Danny Parker, Teddy Geiger, and Daniel Kyriakides, and recorded by Mendes in 2014. After that, it was initially released to iTunes via Island Records on March 16, 2015, as the third pre-order exclusive track and was subsequently serviced to radio via Republic Records on May 5, 2015, as the album's third official single.[2]

The official music video of "Stitches" takes place in a parking garage, where Mendes seems to be thrown around by some invisible force that represents his emotions.[6]

Lyrics

I thought that I've been hurt before
But no one's ever left me quite this sore
Your words cut deeper than a knife
Now I need someone to breathe me back to life

Got a feeling that I'm going under
But I know that I'll make it out alive
If I quit calling you my lover
Move on

You watch me bleed until I can't breathe, shaking
Falling onto my knees
And now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches
Tripping over myself, aching
Begging you to come help
And now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches

Just like a moth drawn to a flame
Oh, you lured me in I couldn't sense the pain
Your bitter heart, cold to the touch
Now I'm gonna reap what I sow
I'm left seeing red on my own

Got a feeling that I'm going under
But I know that I'll make it out alive
If I quit calling you my lover
Move on

You watch me bleed until I can't breathe, shaking
Falling onto my knees
And now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches
Tripping over myself, aching
Begging you to come help
And now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches

Needle and the thread, gotta get you out of my head
Needle and the thread, gonna wind up dead
Needle and the thread, gotta get you out of my head
Needle and the thread, gonna wind up dead
Needle and the thread, gotta get you out of my head
Needle and the thread, gonna wind up dead
Needle and the thread, gotta get you out of my head
Get you out of my head

You watch me bleed until I can't breathe, shaking
Falling onto my knees
And now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches
Tripping over myself, aching
Begging you to come help
And now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches

Now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches
Now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches

Ble, bleed over myself...

I thought that I'd been hurt before
But no one's ever left me quite this sore
Your words cut deeper than a knife
Now I need someone to breathe me back to life

Got a feeling that I'm going under
But I know that I'll make it out alive
If I quit calling you my lover
Move on

You watch me bleed until I can't breathe
Shaking, falling onto my knees
And now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches
Tripping over myself
Aching, begging you to come help
And now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches

Bleed over my
Ble, bleed over my
Ble, bleed over myself
I'll be needing stitches
Bleed over my
Ble, bleed over my
Ble, bleed over myself
I'll be needing stitches

Just like a moth drawn to a flame
Oh, you lured me in, I couldn't sense the pain
Your bitter heart cold to the touch
Now I'm gonna reap what I sow
I'm left seeing red on my own

Got a feeling that I'm going under
But I know that I'll make it out alive
If I quit calling you my lover
Move on

You watch me bleed until I can't breathe
Shaking, falling onto my knees
And now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches
Tripping over myself
Aching, begging you to come help
And now that I'm without your kisses
I'll be needing stitches

Bleed over my
Ble, bleed over my,
Ble, bleed over myself
I'll be needing stitches
Bleed over my
Ble, bleed over my
Ble, bleed over myself

Music video

A first music video for "Stitches" was directed by Jon Jon Augustavo and premiered on Vevo March 18, 2015, following the song's release to digital retailers.[7] It features the same actress, Ivy Matheson, that appears in his videos for "Never Be Alone" and "Life of the Party" and is the third installment in the Handwritten music video series.[6] As of December 2019, the "Stitches" YouTube video has been viewed over 1.2 billion times.[8]

Mendes eventually announced a new music video for the song on his Instagram account,[9] which was premiered on June 24, 2015. The clip begins with Mendes driving his car into an abandoned parking lot where he gets out and begins singing the song's verses. As he does an invisible force or a ghost is knocking him over in various ways. As the song goes on the force or ghost gets more vicious and slams his head into his car window. Mendes regains strength and runs through the parking lot but the force or ghost knocks his body into a wall where he goes to a bathroom to wash off his disabled face but after rinsing it finds that it has gone back to normal. As a child, Mendes would pretend to be attacked by a ghost.

In July 2015, an acoustic version video duet with Hailee Steinfeld was also released.[10]

Live performances

Mendes appeared on Good Morning America on April 17, 2015 to promote the then-newly released album and performed "Stitches".[11] On April 29, 2015, he performed the song live on both The Ellen DeGeneres Show[12] and on Conan as the episodes' musical guest.[13] On June 21, 2015, he performed the song at the 2015 Much Music Video Awards.[14] Mendes sang "Stitches" again at the 2016 People's Choice Awards, followed by a performance of "I Know What You Did Last Summer" with Camila Cabello.[15] It was also performed on The Jonathan Ross Show. Mendes performed the track on The Voice UK final on 9 April 2016. He has also performed a stripped-down version at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards. His performance was praised by several publications such as Rolling Stone and TIME, with particular praise towards his vocal performance and instrumental skills.[16][17] In the finals of the Voice Kids in the Philippines, Justin Alva made this the duet song and ended up in third place.

Remix

The song was remixed by Norwegian production duo SeeB. The track was released as "Stitches (SeeB Remix)" on 16 October 2015 on Island Records, a division of UMG Recordings, Inc.[18]
